How to draw different types of dresses

Watch this guide to master how to draw three types of dresses: the Little Black Dress, a simple slip dress and a bold ruffled number.

Step 1

Gather a 2B Graphite Pencil, 0.1mm nib Fineliner, and Promarkers (including Black Promarker and other shades).

Step 2

Start by drawing the basic forms for each dress design. For the Little Black Dress, sketch a form-fitting bodice that hugs the figure closely, adding a detail like a thigh-high slit on one side. For the simple slip dress, draw a sleek and smooth silhouette that drapes naturally over the figure. To create a bold ruffled dress, use a series of connected zigzag lines in a downward motion to suggest ruffles.

Step 3

Using the 2B Graphite Pencil, refine each dress shape. For the form-fitting dress, ensure the bodice conforms to the body. Enhance the zigzag patterns for the ruffled dress by adding more curves and layers to create volume and depth.

Step 4

Use the 0.1mm nib Fineliner to outline the pencil sketches. Apply more pressure in areas where thicker lines are needed, such as the dress outlines or details requiring emphasis.

Step 5

Fill in the dress designs using Promarkers. For the Little Black Dress, use the Black Promarker, leaving a narrow line of white space to serve as a highlight, indicating where light reflects off the fabric. For the simple slip dress, use a lighter shade, and leave subtle gaps where the fabric catches light. For the ruffled dress, apply a darker shade beneath the ruffles to create shadows and depth.

Step 6

Review each dress design to ensure the highlights, shadows, and overall shapes are balanced. Make any final adjustments to refine the look of each dress. Once you are satisfied with the details, you will have three unique dress styles complete: a chic Little Black Dress, a minimalist Slip Dress, and a dramatic Ruffled Dress.
