How to draw jeans

Discover how to achieve the look and feel of denim jeans – an iconic wardrobe staple recognised for its durable, sturdy structure.

Step 1

Begin by drawing the basic outline of the garment using a Graphite Pencil. Focus on creating a structured shape to represent the stiff quality of denim fabric.

Step 2

Go over the initial sketch using a 0.1mm nib Fineliner to add detailed elements, such as seams, pockets, and any additional stitching.

Step 3

Choose a Watercolour Pencil in a blue shade that matches the denim you’re replicating, such as True Blue. Roughly apply color and texture to the jeans, ensuring to cover the surface evenly.

Step 4

Use a blue Promarker (like Cadet Blue) with the broad chisel end and apply it over the watercolour pencil. This will cause the watercolour to bleed slightly, blending the colors and creating a soft texture.

Step 5

Take a blue Studio Collection Pencil (such as Royal Blue) and add additional texture and details to the fabric, emphasizing the unique qualities of denim. Use a White Pencil to add highlights, enhancing the texture and depth of the denim, especially around areas where the fabric might catch light.

Step 6

Re-ink the details using a 0.8mm nib Fineliner to reinforce the outlines and intricate elements of the design. This will give your illustration a polished and defined look.
