How to illustrate menswear

Though menswear is often overshadowed by womenswear in the fashion industry, it has its own unique considerations. Watch how to illustrate menswear in this 6 step video guide.

Step 1

Begin by sketching the model with a Graphite Pencil, using seven heads for the figure’s proportions—three for the torso and four for the legs.

Step 2

Add details to the fabric, such as a lapel on a jacket and folds in the trousers if you are drawing a suit. Next, fill in the facial features, keeping them angular for a traditional look.

Step 3

Outline the sketch using a 0.1mm nib Fineliner, carefully tracing over the lines to define the figure and details.

Step 4

Colour the face, hair, and outfit. For a classic suit, use a Black Promarker. The chisel nib is ideal for covering larger areas; start by outlining the suit with the angled nib, then use the flat tip to fill in the rest.

Step 5

Use the Promarker Brush tip for precise touch-ups, refining the edges and smaller details of the drawing to ensure a clean finish.

Step 6

Finally, use Studio Collection Pencils to add texture to the fabric, enhancing the realistic appearance of the suit and completing the illustration.
