Discover how to enhance your oil painting with Artists’ Painting Medium and Blending & Glazing Medium. Watch this masterclass for expert tips on achieving smooth blends, fine details, and rich transparent layers.

Contents:
00:11 Introduction
00:21 Using Artists’ Painting Medium
01:12 Exploring Blending and Glazing Medium
02:05 Choosing the right medium for your painting

We explore two oil mediums, Artists' Painting Medium and Blending and Glazing Medium, examining the properties that make them suitable for certain purposes.  For example, Artists' Painting Medium reduces viscosity and improves the flow of paint, whilst slowing drying time.  This makes it especially useful for creating smooth, gradated colour, as well as glazing.  Blending and Glazing Medium is similar, but it has a lighter body, and is the best choice when painting transparent layers of colour, blending colours and staining.  It will leave you with a smooth, even surface with minimal brush stroke retention.  It is important to consider the results you would like to achieve when choosing a medium, subtle differences can have a remarkable impact.

Video transcript

00:12 Hello, today I’m going to demonstrate two mediums for use with oil paint: Artists’ Painting Medium and Blending and Glazing Medium.

00:21 First, I will show you Artists’ Painting Medium. I’m using it here with an opaque colour, Artists’ Oil Colour Cadmium Green Pale.
00:30 Artists’ Painting Medium reduces the degree of viscosity of oil paint, improving flow and slowing drying. This makes it ideal for working on fine details, building smooth areas of gradated colour and glazing.
00:48 Here it is when dry…
00:51 Now, using a Monarch Brush Fan, I’m going to blend this transparent Artists’ Oil Colour Bright Red to meet the Cadmium Green Pale, using the medium to help create a gradated ground.
01:06 The Bright Red’s transparency also makes it a good choice for glazing, as you can see here.
01:13 I’m now going to move on to the Blending and Glazing Medium.
01:17 It works in a similar way to Artists’ Painting Medium but has a lighter body. It’s the best choice when you want to build up transparent layers of colour, making it perfect for blending, stroke work and, in particular, for staining.
01:33 I’m going to start by illustrating its staining property.
01:37 First, I’ll show a stain of Bright Red over Cadmium Green Pale.
01:42 Next, Winsor Green Phthalo over Bismuth Yellow.
01:46 Now here is an example of how it can be used to blend colours, using Winsor Green Phthalo with Bright Red.
01:55 Lastly, the medium with Winsor Green Phthalo over a white ground, showing how you can create a smooth, even surface with this medium.
02:05 It’s good to consider the properties of each oil medium when deciding which one is best to use in your painting. I hope you found this video helpful!
