Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brushes are made from only the finest Kolinsky Sable hair in rust-proof, seamless nickel plated ferrules with black polished handles. The standards of quality for this brush were set in 1866, when Her Majesty Queen Victoria gave orders that Winsor & Newton should produce the very finest water colour brushes in her favourite size, the No.7. To create her portraits of family members and beautiful landscapes, Victoria would settle for only the very finest tools and found ours to be unsurpassed in quality. To that end, she awarded Winsor & Newton the Royal Warrant in 1841 – something we still hold to this day.

Vintage brushes were made better

"The new versions of these brushes are not made to the standards that they used to, especially in the smaller sizes. The hairs are of inferior quality I feel, and many don't come to a nice point right from the get go. They are crimped and scraggly rather than straight and smooth. The branding is cheaply stamped on the brush, which gets rubbed off after a while so you can no longer tell what kind of brush or size it is. The vintage brushes were engraved into the handle with a nice gold paint. I own about 8 or 9 "modern" Series 7 brushes of varying sizes. Only two are good brushes. The rest are garbage. I also own about 4 or 5 vintage ones made in the 70's and 80's. All of these are great. My advice is to never buy an expensive brush online where you can't hand pick the one you are getting. Only buy them in a fine arts store where you can wet the brush and test it out first. The store near me has a Buddha board next to their brushes with a pot of water to test them, which is perfect. Also, the ones that were garbage were all online purchases. My good brushes were hand picked."

The size 2 is small

"The size 2 is small but mighty. It holds a ton of water and pigment. It's also got quite a nice point on it. It frizzes when dry, like most sable brushes, but once wet it shapes into a nice point again."

My order was lost in

"My order was lost in the UPS delivery system, arriving AFTER my online class. Meanwhile in an attempt to accommodate me for an upcoming class, a duplicate order was delivered. So, I received and was charged for two orders at $800. 00 each. I could not use either. I wrote customer service and asked for a return label. Days later, I received an email return label, but it incorrectly identifies me as the delivery destination instead of Winsor & Newton. This is exhausting and not at all the experience I expect from Winstor & Newton. I expect to honor my original order with full payment. I would like to return the duplicate box in tact, and my credit card reimbursed, but I still lack the correct return label to return the box and contents to Winsor & Newton. Any assistance you may provide will be appreciated. Your fan, Linda Carpenter"

"These Series 7 Brushes are the epitome of perfection and they are exceptional! I’ve been painting with these since 1972 and they are as perfect as if they are brand new and worth the cost. I learned to use watercolors with a Chinese artist who only wanted me to use Winsor&Newton professional watercolors, Series 7 brushes and Arches watercolor paper. I highly recommend all of these. I now also use W&N cold press 140lb paper now too."
