Colour story: Alizarin Crimson
A deep, dramatic red pigment with an eventful history to match. Made from the madder plant, it is prized for its ability to produce rich, permanent purples and browns due to its blue undertones. It is known for having a long history of use in dyeing cloth across Ancient Egypt, Iran, Asia and Southern Europe, and has had a lasting impact on artists’ palettes to this day, including the likes of Henri Matisse and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
